Feature Story - Summer 2009

Interstate 95 Express Toll Lane Baltimore, Md.

PROJECT COST: $86.8 Million

Interstate 95 Express Toll Lane Baltimore, Md.

Another project began in January 2008 on the Maryland Transportation Authority Interstate 95 Express Toll Lane Projects. When complete, the I-95 will be six lanes in each direction from Interstate 895 in northeast Baltimore to north of White March Boulevard.

The 10-mi stretch will feature four, free general-purpose lanes in each direction and two variable-toll lanes.

Cherry Hill Construction of Jessup, Md., received the largest contract for $86.8 million for adding new pavement to the outside of the existing lanes on mainline I-95 south of Chesaco Avenue to Kenwood Avenue. The job includes building managed lanes over the 1-mi stretch of existing I-95 and extending two bridges. A concrete barrier will separate the express-toll lanes from the general-purpose lanes.

The cost of the toll will vary depending on the time of day and traffic conditions. The toll lanes will also provide access for emergency response vehicles if an accident occurs on the general-purpose lanes.

The project includes grading, drainage and sewer work, adding retaining walls, noise barriers and other improvements extending box culverts. Completion is scheduled for January 2011.
