Anne Arundel Medical Center Annapolis, Md.
PROJECT COST: $142.8 million
Aiming to meet the growing demand for health care in the region, Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Md., has embarked on a $424-million expansion project that will nearly double the size of its campus.
The expansion includes a new $142.8-million, eight-story, 641,568-sq-ft patient tower with 50 private rooms, eight operating rooms and an enlarged emergency department with a separate pediatric area; a seven-story, 240,000-sq-ft ambulatory services pavilion; and two parking garages with a combined 2,100 spaces. Two other garages have already opened. The addition will allow the hospital to serve an additional 6,000 inpatients annually, for a total of more than 28,000.
Whiting-Turner Contracting Co. of Baltimore began work on the project in March. Anne Arundel Medical Center anticipates completion in August 2011. A concrete spread-footing foundation supports the structural-steel building.
The hospital plans to seek LEED certification. It has invested approximately $2 million in sustainable features, including a green roof on the patient tower that will catch and filter rain water, an energy-efficient air-conditioning and cooling system, use of regional and renewable resources and installation of environmentally friendly lighting and plumbing fixtures.
Anne Arundel Medical Center moved from its downtown location to the current campus in 2001 and has experienced tremendous growth, especially in emergency services, with 72,000 people seeking such care in 2007, up from 55,000 in 2001.
