Feature Story - Summer 2009

Robinwood Medical Center Hagerstown, Md.

PROJECT COST: $294 million

Washington County Health System’s $294-million Robinwood Medical Center in Hagerstown, Md., broke ground in February 2008, and the three main towers topped out in March.

The new 267-bed, 500,000-sq-ft hospital replaces one built in seven stages, starting in 1934. All the patient rooms will be private. There also will be 17 operating rooms.

The emergency department, which serves more than 70,000 patients annually, will include 53 treatment rooms, two trauma rooms and two cardiac rooms to facilitate more rapid care delivery.

Matthei & Colin Associates of Chicago designed the facility. Gilbane Building Co. of Providence, R.I., is constructing the $150-million hospital. The new structural-steel building sits on 150 caissons. The project will consume 3 million tons of structural steel, 250,000 cu yds of concrete and 110,000 sq ft of masonry.

All soil excavated for the project was reused elsewhere on the site. Planted areas throughout the parking areas will filter rainwater. Contractors will use volatile organic compound-free paints.

Architectural sunshades will decrease heat gain from the sun. A central mechanical system will loop chilled water for cooling all refrigerators and radiology equipment.
