Telegraph Road Interchange Improvements Alexandria, Va.
PROJECT COST: $236 Million
The $236-million Telegraph Road Interchange Improvement project in Alexandria, Va. – the final major component of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge replacement project – will create a grade-separated interchange with Interstate-95/the Capital Beltway to improve traffic flow and provide easier and safer pedestrian access.
CK Constructors, a joint venture between Corman Construction of Annapolis Junction, Md., and Kiewit Corp. of Omaha, Neb., began the work in February 2008 and expects to finish in 2013.
Crews are widening and rebuilding the beltway’s inner and outer loops to connect with two through and three local lanes already built and running from north of Route 210 in Maryland, across the Woodrow Wilson Bridge.
New ramps will separate traffic on Telegraph Road from side street traffic. The first ramp opened to traffic in fall 2008. Ramps to carry traffic from the outer loop above Telegraph Road to Huntington Avenue or North Kings Highway and to southbound Telegraph Road are expected to open this summer. Additional ramps are scheduled to open in 2010.
The contract calls for constructing 24 lane mi of roadway with 321,000 surface yards of paving, 11 bridges, five box-culvert extensions, drainage improvements, 100,000 sq ft of retaining walls, potentially 150,000 sq ft of noise walls, pedestrian paths and environmental mitigation.
