Excellence in design and construction isn’t reserved for megaprojects. Drawing from a record number of entries, our six independent jurors discovered exceptional projects completed on modest budgets.
Emblematic of this theme is our overall Project of the Year winner—The Walter L. Rice Education Building at the VCU Inger & Walter Rice Center for Environmental Life Sciences in Charles City, Va. The $2.8-million 4,890-sq-ft winning project blends exceptional design with careful construction. It is the first building in Virginia to be awarded the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED platinum certification, and received 54 out of the required 52 credits.
Overall, the jury honored 40 projects in 16 categories, representing the finest examples of design and construction in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia.
The aim of Mid-Atlantic Construction’s awards program is to honor those projects that best achieve the established goals of the project team; overcome significant challenges; adopt innovative approaches; and exhibit exceptional teamwork.
Jurors were allowed to award one Project of the Year per category and multiple Awards of Merit. Jurors could choose to not award a Project of the Year or Awards of Merit in the categories. The jurors, who represent architects, engineers and general contractors, are all active members of the local building community. They abstained from voting on any projects with which they are affiliated or have a conflict of interest.
This year our judges also awarded three Special Jury Awards in Architectural Design, Engineering Design, and Project Management.
Mid-Atlantic Construction is proud to honor these 40 projects that represent the very best in one of the nation’s top construction markets.
